Breaking records of the last nine years, a whopping 45,040 Law aspirants have applied for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2016, from across twenty cities in the country. This, after last year's 39,686 applications, marks the highest recorded number received for the centralized online law entrance exam which will be conducted on May 8 across an estimated 170 centers.
Since 2008, CLAT has been the ultimate pass for aspiring lawyers looking to enter any one of the seventeen coveted National Law Universities (NLUs). This year, the exam will be convened by the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab.
Paramjit Jaswal, Vice Chancellor, RGNUL, Punjab said, "This year we have received the highest number of applications compared to the last nine years. The confirmed list of centers allocated for the conduction of the online exam will be released in a day or two." He further added, "We have identified 170 centers as of now for the conduction of the exam but there might be deductions if the number of aspirants allotted to each of these centers is below 100. In this case, the center will not be considered."
The total number of applications received for LLB (UG) is 39,468 and for LLM (PG) is 5,572. As of 2015, the number of applications received for CLAT was set at 39,686 (34,172 for UG and 5,514 for PG) which was the highest then. Between 2008 and 2015, the number of students appearing for the CLAT exam had increased around 200 per cent, a statement on the CLAT website said. This year, however, the number of applications has exceeded that of the previous year's (2015) by 5,354.
