Fee for all IITs has been increased from Rs. 90,000 to Rs. 2 lakh and an official announcement will come out on Friday, says senior HRD Ministry official.

Studying at the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is going to cost much more from the coming academic session as the Central government has decided to double the fee.
The annual tuition fees for undergraduate courses will be increased from Rs. 90,000 to Rs. 2 lakh. However, there will be a total fee waiver for the differently abled and students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and weaker sections.

“A decision to hike the fee over two-fold has been taken by the HRD Ministry following a proposal by an IIT panel,” a senior official of the Human Resource Development Ministry said.
The IITs are the most- sought-after institutes in India for engineering, as per the government of India's National Institute Ranking Framework.
In the recently released government rankings, they have bagged all top 10 spots for engineering, with the IIT-Madras standing first.
The tuition fee was last revised in 2013 under the UPA government from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 80,000. In 2008, the fee was increased from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000.
The IIT panel, headed by IIT-Roorkee Chairman Ashok Misra, met last month and approved a proposal for a three-fold increase in fee from the present Rs. 90,000 to Rs. three lakh from the next academic session. However, the final decision was taken by HRD Minister Smriti Irani, who chairs the IIT Council, the highest decision-making body with the representatives of 16 of the total 23 IITs.
The panel also approved that the students belonging to families whose annual income is less than Rs. 1 lakh will be able to get full fee waiver, along with those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the differently abled.
The benefit will not only be limited to these categories. The students belonging to families with an annual income less than Rs. five lakh will be entitled to a waiver of two-thirds of the tuition fee, irrespective of their category. The rest of the students who do not fall under any of these categories will be helped with loans to fund their education, the officials said.
While the students already enrolled will continue to pay their fee as per the old slabs, the new structure will be applicable to fresh enrolments.
