Karnataka seeks exemption from NEET Medical Entrance Exam 2016
In the wake of objections to a single entrance exam to medical and dental colleges, Karnataka government has decided to seek exemption from National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions for the 2016-18 academic year.

Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil told reporters on Monday the state government has filed an application impleading itself in the Supreme court seeking exemption from NEET for this academic year. He said the government has appointed a counsel to defend the state in the Apex Court, since private medical colleges have filed the review petition in the court.

I can understand the difficulties and apprehension of our students. They have already prepared for CET exams and how can you expect them to write NEET. There is also confusion among students as the court allowed the students for writing another exam on May 24 after it was first held on May 1. So we have sought exemption"", he added

Patil said the government has also set deadline for deemed universities to part with 25% of medical seats to the government so that poor and meritorious students could get a fair chance.

Patil, who held a meeting with departmental officials, asked the eight deemed universities to part with 410 seats as against 127 now. It is mandatory for all deemed universities to give 25% of their seats to the state government.

The minister said Medical Council of India (MCI) has also approved to admit students to three newly created government medical colleges in Kodagu, Chamarajanagar and Karwar (Uttar Kannada).
